Our first full day in Singapore has been busy. First thing this morning we set off for the National Library which was just down the road from the hotel. The staff on duty were fantastic and went out of their way to assist us. :) They even gave me a free book to bring home! It was mid afternoon before we finished my list with the Archives scheduled for tomorrow.
The building is ultra modern with glass lifts (sorry no pictures - they were very quick going from Level 1 to 11. This is one of the views from Level 11, the old and new in Singapore live side by side.
Tonight we walked up to Kampong Glam which is the Muslim area of Singapore. It is one of the areas which has been left virtually untouched with lots of small shopfronts. So much nicer than all of the skyscrapers around the place!
Kampong Glam is one of the areas where you can eat Murtabak - a type of pancake usually stuffed with mutton curry, egg and onion which you dip in curry. We also tried the chicken variety of murtabak but prefer the mutton any day! The restaurant was opposite the Sultan Mosque and we arrived just as evening prayers were being held.
Then it was off to Little India to see the lights for Navratri and Deepavali (also known as Diwali). the atmosphere was fantastic - lots of street stalls with fresh flowers and fruit. The decorations along Serangoon Rd (the main street in Little India were beautiful. We spent about an hour looking at the lights and stalls.
